Providing Support During Difficult Times

Suburban Animal Hospital End of Life Care

Losing a pet is emotional for any owner, and our team is here to offer guidance and support throughout this extremely difficult time. Whether your companion is entering the golden years or has a terminal illness, you can rely on us to help you navigate the decision-making process.

Making a Decision

In some situations, your veterinarian can make a definitive recommendation regarding euthanasia. However, there may be times when you must ultimately make the decision based on our medical prognosis and what you observe in your pet’s behavior. The following are signs that your beloved pet is no longer experiencing a high quality of life:

  • Frequent vomiting or diarrhea
  • He or she has stopped eating or will only eat by force
  • Frequent incontinence
  • Loss of interest in all or most of his or her favorite activities
  • Chronic labored breathing or coughing
  • Unable to stand or walk independently
What to Expect

Once a decision is made, we review the procedure to make sure you’re as prepared as possible when the day arrives. Euthanasia is often a two-step process. First, a sedative is administered to make your pet calm and comfortable. Then, a medication is injected, so your pet is no longer aware of the end-of-life experience.

The entire process is fairly quick and is similar to what you would feel when undergoing general anesthesia. It’s an individual choice whether you and your family are present that day, and our team can counsel you through the various decisions that must be made.

At Suburban Animal Hospital, we are always sensitive to your needs, but we’re especially aware of how hard this experience can be for you and your loved ones. You can trust us to provide the gentle, considerate care that you, your pet, and your family deserve.
